3rd & 4th graders are learning about musical form this week and we’ve been having fun getting this abstract idea into a kinetic experience! The video below shows our 4th graders doing a parachute routine to the theme from Star Wars.
They had to come up with motions for each section of the song and be able to perform them all the way through. We first learned that the form of this song can be expressed as ” Introduction A A B B A A B B A A Coda”. This is known as an extended ternary form, or in more simple terms, a sandwich. (i.e. bread – cheese – bread). It was great fun learning the motions and having our students perform for the camera!
This idea, and other fantastic things for the music classroom can be found via the fabulous music educator Artie Almeida.
