Noteflight & Soundation

Many of our students at RES & SMS will soon be getting some experience using these great online music education tools.  Noteflight is a online music notation tool great for learning about music literacy and composition.  Soundation is a fully functional digital audio workstation (or DAW) based entirely online. Both are accessible for anywhere and each offers a demo that you can explore free of charge.  We are looking into a subscription to these services in the future but for now have fun with the demo of each! Some more information is below

Pics from the VSO Petting Zoo today at RES!

Today our 3rd and 4th graders enjoyed a visit from the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s Musical Petting Zoo. Students were treated to an introduction and demonstration of several orchestral instruments after which they were invited to play and explore any of the instruments on their own! This hands on, free explore format is so important to fostering a love of instrument playing. It was a wonderful experience for our young learners and musicians!

Thanks to all RES staff and volunteers for making this possible, and to Rebecca Kopycinsky & the VSO for presenting!

Volunteers Needed for VSO Petting Zoo visit to RES!

Greetings RES families!

We’re in need of 6-7 adult volunteers to assist with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s MusicPetting Zoo visit to RES Friday October, 25th.

Please come help our learners explore and experience the instruments of the symphony orchestra!

Volunteers would be helping students with instruments but there is ZERO musical ability required!  The primary focus would be facilitating an “instrument station” giving students a turn on each instrument, and (when necessary) sanitizing the instruments for the next student.

The schedule for the day is below.  Please feel free to volunteer for one, or both sessions!

11:00 – 12:00    3rd Grade
1:20 – 2:20        4th Grade

Thanks for your help in making this day a success for our students!

Musical Form with Mrs. Senning’s 4th graders

3rd & 4th graders are learning about musical form this week and we’ve been having fun getting this abstract idea into a kinetic experience!   The video below shows our 4th graders doing a parachute routine to the theme from Star Wars.

They had to come up with motions for each section of the song and be able to perform them all the way through.  We first learned that the form of this song can be expressed as ” Introduction A  A  B  B  A  A  B  B  A  A Coda”.    This is known as an extended ternary form, or in more simple terms, a sandwich.  (i.e. bread – cheese – bread).   It was great fun learning the motions and having our students perform for the camera!

This idea, and other fantastic things for the music classroom can be found via the fabulous music educator Artie Almeida.
